On May 11, 1994, NPH Nicaragua became the fourth NPH home in Central America. With the arrival of the first four children a small house was rented in the town of Granada, 35 miles southeast of Managua. More children arrived every week so the small house was quickly outgrown. New property was acquired on the Island of Ometepe, a long, rough and wet boat ride from Granada across Lake Nicaragua. It was christened Casa Santiago. Babies, ages seven and under, still remain on the mainland at Casa Asis in San Jorge. Most of the children at the Nicaraguan home are war orphans. Many of them are Miskito Indians, children from the East Coast of Nicaragua where Spanish is hardly spoken.
Finca San Marcos was the first property bought by NPH in 1994. It was soon too small to serve the needs of children, but continued to be used for farmland. Also there are vegetable gardens at the Casa Santiago and Casa Asis homes. In 2005, the need arose to relocate our family from the island to the mainland, due to the volcanic activity of Volcano Concepcion. The new property for our NPH family is Casa Padre Wasson, near the town of Jinotepe, one hour outside of Managua. Currently, four homes have been built so that, step by step, children can be moved off the island. As the funds become available, we continue to plan for our second phase of construction which includes six more homes. |
