NPH Guatemala celebrates its 16th anniversary
October 24, 2012 - Guatemala
While NPH Guatemala usually celebrates its birthday in November, this year we are celebrating in October so that all of children will be able to participate in the celebration. The house was divided up into teams and the teams competed to win points in two different areas of competition, the games and the dance competition.
This year the teams were divided up into groups and given a theme in which to dance to. Genres included Merengue, Salsa, Pop, Disco, Lambada, and much more; in total there were 14 groups. Each group was a mixture of ages and genders as well as at least one children from our babies house and one child from Sagrada Corazon, the section where our children with special needs lives.
Bobbing for baby food game
The preparation began a week prior to the actual anniversary celebration where points were awarded through out the week to teams with the best porras (cheers), the best dances, and the best flags. Groups met twice a day to put the final presentation together; this would include anything from costumes and props to skits before the dances and porras.
The morning of the anniversary celebration the children gathered together in front of the dinning hall, with the flags that each group made, and went to mass. During mass there was a presentation of the flags and a mass to honor the 16th anniversary. Right after mass it was a mad dash into the sections, the areas where the children live, for the kids to change out of their mass clothes and into their play clothes for field day.
Field day consisted of many activities ranging from an obstacle course to trivia games and bobbing for baby food to a matching strategy game. The games started at 8 am and went till 10 am when a snack break was given. Right after the break the games continued until noon when all the teams came together to compete in a tug of war. The tug of war was a best two out of three situation where the winner would continue on to the next round and the losing team, if they so chose, could help out another team as they advanced. So much fun was had during the tug of war where half the team would start in the mud pit and the other half above the mud pit so that it was inevitable that one did not get dirty during the games, unless your team won.
Once the games were done it was time for lunch and when lunch finished the teams were given time to get ready for the dance competition. All the hard work that the teams put in during the week was finally going to pay off. Each team was given 10 minutes to preform their dance and cheers, and if so wanted could even put together a skit at the beginning.
The competition was judged by Hermanos Mayores (Big Brothers), or former pequeños, and began with a prayer and a porra to pump up the crowd. After that a representative from each team was chosen to go up and pick a number out of a bag to choose order in which the teams were to preform, and then it was time for the competition. Each team presented their dance and porras while the other teams cheered on and encouraged the preforming team.
Once each team finished preforming the judges had time to tally up the scores while everyone had dinner and prepared for the dance to finish the celebration. In the middle of the dance the two categories of winners were announced, dance and games, the winning group of the dance was Pop and the winning group in the games was Waltz. After the announcement it was time to let the party continue and dance the night away.
The 16th anniversary of NPH Guatemala will be one to remember for all the children, staff and volunteers. There couldn’t have been a better way to celebrate.
