New Visitors' Housing Project
Start of construction for our new visitor housing.
September 6, 2012 - Guatemala
At Casa San Andres, our home in Guatemala, we are very fortunate to have groups of visitors who want to come and spend time with our kids. These groups primarily come from various regions of the United States and Canada, but we also receive many other visitors from all over the world.
Currently, we only have one house in which we can accommodate all of these visitors. When we have multiple groups visiting us, there is just not enough space for all our guests to stay in one location. Quite often, we have to relocate some children out of their sections in order to accommodate our guests.
Start of the road to the new housing
Thankfully, this lack of adequate visitor accommodations should no longer be a problem for us in the future due to a recent generous gift. We are happy to report that we have received a generous donation from the Friends of the Orphans office in Canada to build new visitors housing.
Every year, there are groups of visitors from Canada who come to help us with many little construction projects around our house. During their visits they must have realized our housing limitations. This need for visitor housing has been addressed by a long time visitor from Canada who has been making yearly visits to our home since 2000, and who wanted to provide us with proper visitor accommodations.
Right now, we are planning to build two dormitory style housing units and a dining hall. We are also looking into expanding this area by adding an all-encompassing visitor’s area with two visitor’s houses. According to Nathan Ingram, Head of Construction, “We would like to expand the project so that we can accommodate more people at our house, and be able to have more opportunities for NPH hosted events.”
Helping us with this project is a university student from our home, Josue Hernandez, who is in his second year of architecture school in Guatemala City. He has come up with the designs for the house and he has also helped us to find the best materials and engineers for the project.
Here at Casa San Andres we are very excited for the start of this project, and we are eagerly waiting for the day that the new housing units will be ready for use.
