Celebrating the Passion, Death and Resurrection of Jesus Christ April 11, 2012 - Peru
This year the Holy Week was not only a time of deep reflection and spiritual preparation for the most important Christian feast; it was also a big challenge for our family. The caregivers, except the tías from the baby house, were given holidays on Thursday and Friday to be able to spend these special days with their own families. The oldest pequeños together with the volunteers were responsible for more than 80 children. Also the kitchen was run by our pequeño Franklin who is doing his year of service and three other teenagers. At the end we all could congratulate ourselves for having done a great job. Our pequeños showed a huge sense of responsibility for their younger brothers and sisters and the younger ones did everything to help so that it was not just a successful, but truly wonderful time.
Palm Sunday Mass
We started to prepare ourselves for this special week already days before. On Palm Sunday many of our children went to confess. The youth leadership group had plenty of meetings to schedule the program. The result was amazing: We played a lot, watched movies with religious topics, organized sports competitions; volleyball for the girls and baseball for the boys, and as a tradition here at NPH Peru, we presented our famous Via Crucis. It´s the third year that our pequeños play a theater to narrate the last hours of Jesus Christ - also this time it was the highlight of Holy Week at our home. We walked through the whole property and stopped at every of the fourteen stations, which had been decorated with lots of love.
Our bravest teenagers also decided to fast, some of them abstained from breakfast, but the majority did not eat anything on Good Friday. This was a big challenge for our children, who always like to eat. And this year it was extremely difficult because our pequeños together with the National and House Director prepared a truly tasty fish dish and the whole property smelled amazing!
Looking back at the last four days, one could say, that we learned a lot about ourselves and what we are able to achieve if we stick together as a family and if we believe in ourselves. We reflected a lot and grew in our Faith as Christians, one of the most important values that we have in our lives.
