“Education’s Friends” Scholarship Program – Empowering Honduras’ Leaders of Tomorrow

In Honduras, statistics show that only one in five young adults go to college. In many rural communities, young people do not have access to school beyond sixth grade, unless they are willing to travel for hours every day to get to school. Vulnerable families simply do not have the resources to allow their children to continue studying. To change this phenomenon, NPH Honduras offers a scholarship program called “Education’s Friends” in communities affected by poverty, where many children and youth do not go to school due to economic constraints or simply because of family and cultural traditions. The scholarship program gives these youth the opportunity and confidence to change their lives and the lives of their families through education.

Through this program, NPH Honduras provides academic scholarships to 46 vulnerable adolescents and young adults from 21 different communities. We support students from middle school through university. Currently we are proudly supporting 11 university students in this program, who are studying diverse careers including social work, physical therapy, nursing, education, and others.

Beyond just providing a scholarship, however, NPH Honduras fervently motivates the adolescents and young people who participate in the program to understand the importance of education through diverse support services. These services include workshops, career fairs, psychological support and counseling, and computer classes. The “Education’s Friends” scholarship program empowers vulnerable communities in Honduras, one student at a time.
