Cholera Treatment at St. Damien Hospital Rehydration Center
NPH Haiti - Healthcare (#P-HAI-16027)

A mother and daughter at the St Damien Hospital Rehydration Center

It's been more than six years since cholera struck Haiti, and the epidemic continues today. The deadly bacteria has killed more than 10,500 people and infected hundreds of thousands. Due to lack of sanitation, unclean drinking water, and a chronic shortage of health care personnel, facilities, and resources, cholera has remained prevalent among the Haitian population.

In 2015 (January to December) 3,038 children were seen at St. Damien Rehydration center and were suspected of having cholera due to symptoms. A confirmed 830 children did have cholera and were treated with a minimum hospital stay of three to four days.

The Rehydration Center at St. Damien Pediatric Hospital currently operates with 30 beds, two pediatricians, nine nurses, six aides, and five housekeepers.

At the beginning of the epidemic there were multiple cholera centers in Haiti but now there are approximately 15 that NPH Haiti can identify. We are the only know pediatric facility for cholera.

In the past few weeks our number of patients has tripled due to the rainy season. For the first two weeks of May 2016, there were 54 cholera cases with over 105 consultations for diarrhea.

Your gift can help save lives. Please consider donating to the St. Damien Rehydration Center.
