Since 2004, the Oncology Department at St. Damien Pediatric Hospital has grown from one bed to 13 beds. The program has advanced from treating three types of solid tumors; neuroblastoma (kidney), retinoblastoma (eye) and hepatoblastoma (liver) to nearly all types of cancers except brain tumors. The department also treats certain blood disorders.
St. Damien offers chemotherapy, but all radiation therapy cases are referred to Santo Domingo, the capital of the Dominican Republic, as radiation therapy is not available anywhere in Haiti. If a patient needs radiation, we have a program where the patient and a guardian can stay at our NPH home in the Dominican Republic during their treatment.
After the devastating earthquake in 2010, the world-renowned St. Jude Research Hospital (United States) offered St. Damian a partnership. As part of this agreement, international training is offered to our staff as well as other opportunities for learning such as conferences.
FHACI: “Fondation Haitienne Anti-Cancer infantile” is the name of the new foundation created to support the work of the oncology department at St. Damien. All of our treatment plans are offered at no cost to the family. We offer treatment from infancy to 14 years old and usually all beds are full.
Since 2004, we have assisted more than 350 patients; 65 of them were seen in 2015. Our department includes physicians, nurses, a psychologist, a social worker and other office staff who make running the department possible.
Our oncology department does an incredible job taking care of the most vulnerable children that don't have another place to be treated. Additionally the NPH Italy fundraising office, Fondazione Francesca Rava, is helping to expand the current oncology department space to offer more beds and needed equipment, thus offering life-saving treatment to more children and their families.
If you have any questions about this project, please contact your nearest fundraising office. Click "Sponsor Project" to give an online donation. We are very grateful for any amount you can donate.
Note: the project cost includes a 10% premium to support the general needs of NPH and its children.
