All of our children have suffered great loss before passing through our gates and into our family. Many have suffered abuse. The emotional wounds that they carry with them are deep, even if the smiles that they have worn with us are bright and honest.
The best therapy that all of our children receive is gained through the strong ties that they have developed with each other through their common loss, yet sometimes they need help and guidance as they grow and revisit their pasts, examining their emotional and physical scars as they try to understand the hand that they have been dealt in this life. Opening up these wounds again can be painful, and at times catastrophic, if it is not done with support and reassurance.
The biggest obstacle that any of our children face in their lives is a sense of self-pity or resentment to a life that they feel has been unfair to them. Professional help and therapy can be the difference between creative analysis in search of healing and destructive analysis in search of self-pity. We try to teach our kids that while we canít change anything that happened five seconds, five minutes, five hours or five years ago, but we can choose our next step and we can choose how we decide to face our futures.
For the past year, we have enjoyed the work of Mercedes, a young psychologist who we hired after she came to us for an internship. What she might lack in experience, she more than makes up for with love, discretion and an honest interest in helping our kids overcome their emotional obstacles and worries. Our kids know for a fact that they are important to her.
We are currently restructuring our psychology department, with Mercedes at the helm, and hope to hire two more psychologists to bring her team to a total of four professionals.
Please help us help our kids see through their scars and to understand that their futures can be as bright as they decide that they should be!
