Offering courses and activities to encourage our kids spirituality, their morals and their self-esteem is an important part of our formation programs. For this we developed several courses and workshops.
"Chicas Poderosas" Girl Empowerment Workshop
"Chicas Poderosas" workshop is meant to empower our girls through raising their self-esteem and helping them on their understanding of themselves as well as their relations with their brothers and sisters. Every year one female volunteer leads this workshop giving them different and fun activities. Topics include true friendship, healthy dating relationships, cycle of poverty, domestic violence, leadership skills, self-confidence, respect, personal development, personal values, life goals, healthy sexuality, standards of beauty, societal expectations of women and men, bullying, coexistence, etc.
"Special Activities" Item is meant for day trips and extra activities for the girls. e.g. Last year the coordinator took the girls to the Tolerance Museum in Mexico City and used the money on transport, entrance and food.
Religious Programs and Courses
We also have many religious programs and other special courses which are meant to raise our kids spirituality and therefore their morals, their love for each other, for themselves and create this inner wellness.
Catholic religion is at the core of NPH Mexico. Our children grow up with Catholic values, go to mass on Sundays, pray before dinner and give thanks for the work of NPH Founder Father Wasson’s great labour. We want to foster mature and continuous personal relationship with Jesus Christ in our children and to give all our children the first three sacraments: baptism, first communion and confirmation. The main goal of raising our children in the Catholic faith, is that they will open their hearts to the Holy Spirit and to the great love of God.
Catechism is taught as part of our basic Christian doctrine. A catechism is a text which contains the fundamental Christian truths formulated in a way that facilitates their understanding. Catechism is a compulsory subject which is taught twice a week to all our children, from kindergarten up to high school. We need to buy 400 new Catechism books for our children. The books NPH uses are those required by the Dioceses of Cuernavaca to train the children for their First Communion and their Confirmation. Some of the books we buy can be reused in future; others not, since they are workbooks and primary children will write in them.
The home also requires different kind of materials which are needed during the year for catechism classes, e.g. films, rosaries, photocopies of texts and prayers and CDs. All these materials are very important for making catechism more interesting and easy to follow.
The catechism group is also planning various activities, such as workshops, excursions and retreats. Approximately 60 middle school students are taken to a weekend retreat in the state of Puebla every year, before Confirmation. This retreat is organized by the Catholic Center for Charismatic Renewal. We want our children to participate in retreats with other young people, in order for them to share their thoughts, feelings, knowledge and to open up to other people. There are various other activities planned by the catechists such as retreats in the Dioceses of Cuernavaca and volunteering at a home for elderly people on weekends. At the moment we only have four devoted catechists: three working in the Miacatlan home and one working in Cuernavaca.
