"Do you like eggs, Martin*?"

"Yes, I really like eggs. We eat different kinds, but my favorite is scrambled." Martin answered.

When Martin first arrived at NPH, he was three years old, extremely underweight, malnourished, and suffered from protein deficiency. He was immediately welcomed by the caregivers and medical staff, taken care of, given examinations in the clinic and provided with regular nutritious meals to move him closer to a healthy weight as quickly as possible. Meal after meal, his condition continued to improve. He now has plenty of nutritious food like eggs to eat, which provide him with the protein his body needs to grow and stay healthy.

Martin joined the NPH family along with his three older siblings. He is the son of a single mom who struggled to make ends meet. She worked long hours to earn low wages, and left the children at home while she was away. There were times when Martin and his siblings were left under the care of their grandparents, but both were elderly, not healthy, and were taking care of seven grandchildren at the time. It was not possible for the children to receive adequate care and attention, which is what brought them to our NPH home in Nicaragua.

Martin has been at NPH for a little over three years. He is doing well and at a normal weight, a happy and healthy six-year-old boy. He just started 1st grade this year! Teachers share that he works well independently and also raises his hand to participate in every activity.

Emily, one of his caregivers, was asked to describe young Martin. “His smile and dimples light up the room and his laugh is contagious,” she shares, adding, “Martin is always the first to offer to help with whatever job or chore needs doing around the house. And he can always be counted on to tell the truth.”

Intrigued by this sweet boy, we had to learn more, so we asked him.

Martin, what do you like to do in your free time? I love making cookies, playing tag, hide-and-go-seek, watching movies, going to the fields to play and playing soccer.

What do you want to be when you are older? I want to be a farmer.

What is your favorite food? Hmm...Tajadas (fried green plantains)....and gallo pinto (rice with beans, Nicaraguan style) with cream and cheese on top.

Do you like eggs, Martin? Yes, I really like eggs. We eat different kinds but my favorite is scrambled.

What is your favorite dish with eggs? Pancakes.

Do you like Easter? I do, because it’s a party for God.

What is your favorite part of Easter? Searching for hidden treasure in the Easter egg hunt.

Do you like NPH? Yeah, because we get to study, and watch movies, and there are activities.

Do you get to see your brothers and sisters? Yep, we spend time together and play! Martin has his entire life ahead of him; with his contagious laugh, heart for service and the opportunities that he has been given, we have no doubt that he will lead a strong and healthy one.
