NPH Haiti St. Damien Pediatric Hospital, in collaboration with the Haitian Society of Pediatrics (SHP) and the St. Damien Collaborative, held the Second International Pediatric Conference 1-3 June 2019 in Port au Prince.
The theme of the conference was “University Hospital, a pillar of Optimal Child Health,” which reinforced the importance of teaching hospitals in the continuous improvement of healthcare services, especially in resource-constrained environments like Haiti.
Some 210 participants attended the two-day event that features more than 40 speakers from Haiti, the United States, Italy, Mexico, and Spain. Pediatric residents of St. Damien had the opportunity to showcase their work through poster presentations that were viewed and well-received by all attendees.
During the opening ceremony, Dr. Sandra Cériné and Dr. Steve Pierre received their official pediatric surgery certifications. Their surgical training was supported and funded by the Francesca Rava Foundation based in Italy, an instrumental supporter in the development of St. Damien Pediatric Hospital over the years.
The success of St. Damien’s Second International Pediatric Conference was made possible thanks to the hard work of the Conference Organizing Committee, in particular Committee Coordinator Dr. Vanessa Dor, and the enthusiasm and generosity of the many speakers, moderators, volunteers, and sponsors.
The next occurrence of this biennial event will take place in 2021.
