The goal of the Women’s Empowerment Program (Chicas Poderosas) is to help our young women develop the skills they need to stand up for themselves in their personal relationships, strengthen their self-esteem and teach them that they can be college graduates and professionals in a male-dominated society.
As with all girls, as young women at NPH reach adolescence, many experience a significant drop in self-esteem and motivation. Chicas Poderosas strives to reverse that trend by providing our young women a place where they can openly express themselves, discuss problems, and ask questions without fear of rejection or judgment. It is designed to increase their self-esteem and awareness of the issues facing them, as well as give them a safe place to discuss their concerns, doubts, and ideas.
Depending on the NPH home in which the volunteers serves, she may work with our youngest girls, teenage girls or mixed groups. Some homes even have groups with girls from our nearby communities.
Programming will vary according to the age and maturity level of the girls.
Each volunteer chooses an hogar (group of children of the same age living together) at the beginning of their year. Each home’s Volunteer Coordinator will communicate the expectations for hogar time. Usually, it is six days a week, 6 to 8 p.m., but this might vary per home. This has been described as the most fulfilling part of volunteering, the bond and relationships formed with their hogar of children.
Volunteers have every other weekend off, as well as up to 22 days of vacation time after four months of service. Vacation must be arranged according to the specific home’s policies.
All NPH volunteers receive room and board, access to medical care and a monthly stipend. Volunteers pay for their transportation to and from the home and medical insurance. Volunteers must serve for at least one year.
